Why We Plan Days Out

Free time is strangely easy to waste. The week ends, there is finally a Saturday with nothing in it, and by Sunday evening it has slipped away in chores and half-made plans. On The Spot Magazine exists to change that, one idea at a time. Our purpose is simple: to help you turn spare hours into something you look forward to and remember.

Plans you can start today

We favour ideas that need little more than a free afternoon and a bit of preparation. A trail of clues for the children next door. A picnic that does not end in soggy bread. A day trip close enough to enjoy rather than endure. Our guide on planning a day trip that feels like a mini holiday is a good example of what we aim for: a plan you could follow this coming weekend, without special equipment or a large budget.

Leisure for everyone in the group

Most weekends involve other people: a partner, children, grandparents, friends with very different energy levels. A recurring thread in our writing is how to make plans that work for the whole group, not just the most enthusiastic member. That is why our game guides always include gentle options alongside the competitive ones, and why our hosting articles think about the guest who would rather sit in the shade than join the relay race.

Honest rather than glossy

Leisure writing can easily drift into perfect pictures that nobody's real life resembles. We would rather tell you which picnic dishes travel badly, which garden decorations blow away in a breeze and why an overpacked schedule can spoil a trip. Our advice stays general and practical; we do not claim professional qualifications, and when something depends on local rules or your own circumstances, we say so plainly.

What a good visit leaves you with

  • A clearer idea of what you actually want from your free time.
  • One or two plans that feel easy enough to try soon.
  • A checklist or table you can come back to next time.
  • The confidence to host, explore or simply rest without overthinking it.

How the purpose shapes the site

Because the weekend is our subject, the site is organised around the kinds of plans people make rather than strict topics. You can browse by games, events, decor or tourism, or simply read whatever is newest on the homepage. Each article tries to answer one question well, so you can find what you need and get back to your day.

We are a small team writing under pen names, and we read every draft together before it goes out. If you would like to know more about who we are and how the magazine is run, start with About On The Spot Magazine. If an idea of ours worked for you, or fell flat, we would genuinely like to hear about it on the Say Hello page.

In our own words

What keeps us writing

Each of us has lost a perfectly good Saturday to indecision. The magazine is our answer to that: a stock of ideas ready to pick up whenever a free day appears.

We aim for plans that suit the whole group, from the eager organiser to the guest who would rather watch from a deckchair, and we keep the advice honest about what can go wrong.

The writers

Three pen names, three kinds of weekend

We sign with first names only and split the subjects by what we each do with our own days off.

  • Tibor

    Games and outdoor play

Keeps a boules set in the car boot and a deck of cards in every jacket. Writes the game guides and anything involving teams, rules or a scoreboard.

  • Anouk

    Day trips and picnics

Has a day bag permanently packed by the door. Looks after the trip planning, the picnic baskets and the clue trails through the park.

  • Imelda

    Decor and gatherings

Never met a garden that could not take another string of lights. Covers table styling, party planning and the cosy side of staying in.
